Art History and Visual Culture

Status:Active, full but can join waiting list
Group leader:
When: Monthly on Thursdays

This group offers an accessible approach to the subject of art history.

The specific topic area for this year is Paris and Modernity 1870 - 1920. This group will look at key artists and art movements linked to the development of Modernism such as Impressionism and later Cubism. In addition, we’ll be looking at broader themes related to modernity and the visual culture of Paris at this time. This could include the impact of other media, such as: photography, film, and print, as well as important changes that the city of Paris itself was undergoing.

The intended format of the session is a presentation by the group leader for about 30 mins. Then after a break, we’ll look in more depth at some specific images and paintings, with a chance for group members to contribute.

The dates up to Christmas are:  September 10th, October 8th, November 5th, December 3rd.
