The focus is on enjoyment. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t danced before, as we don't attempt to learn and remember the dances but just walk them through first, then dance them to the music with a little prompting from the ‘caller’. Our more experienced dancers will partner newcomers and help when needed.
Barn Dancing covers both Folk and Country Dancing. English Folk Dances were those dances originated and danced by ordinary people and trades-folk at such times as weddings, harvests, christenings and other celebrations, going back to the 8th century. Country Dances are more recent and were those dances performed by the more entitled e.g. local landowners, nobility, courtiers and generally speaking were quite formalised. An example of these dances can be seen in the film of ‘Pride and Prejudice’
Doctors do say that the best exercise of all is dancing for mental as well as physical health so why not come and join us. Cost £3 per session including refreshments.
The Barn Dance Group is an independent group, not run by Eastbourne Central U3A. Its sessions are open to members but also attended by non-members. It provides a great opportunity for those interested in this activity to dance and meet like-minded people, but it operates separately to Eastbourne Central and is not overseen by us.
